Raecine & Raylan
Single mother Raecine was “very concerned about my situation.” She didn’t have a job and was still in school.
Additionally, her son, Raylan, despite being full-term, was a tiny baby—3 pounds, 14 ounces. “That was the scariest thing,” she said, “[To have him] stay in the NICU for about two and a half weeks. It wasn’t long, but it was long enough for me.”
The Kansas Children’s Service League, a Healthy Families America affiliate, was there to help, visiting Raecine at home, answering her questions, and helping her to “adapt to every single milestone change.” She learned to “work with him where he needs to be, and to bond with him on that level, and that brings us closer together.” Hear more about Raecine’s HFA experience in this video:
I didn’t know how to raise a kid. I needed help. I didn’t know where to go. I’m an only child myself, so raising a boy, I had no clue…[Healthy Families America] changed my life to the nth degree—to the point that I wanted to finish school just for him, to have a better life for him, to show him that you can overcome anything.
