Norland & Jayden
When his son Jayden was on the way, Norland connected with the Children’s Trust program [part of the Healthy Families America affiliate network], which paired him with a trained professional to meet with them, one-on-one, every week, until Jayden was three.
Norland wanted to learn milestones, like how to potty train his son. When Jayden was a bit older and started having tantrums, he wanted to learn about appropriate discipline.
“One of the things I learned from Healthy Families was stress control,” explains Norland. “That has helped me not be like it was when I was a child where my mom would completely lose her temper. I may get angry, but I am always able to bring myself back and give a consequence that is proper.”
Norland had a vision for the future for his family and himself. Working with the program, Norland got what he needed to ensure that his son Jayden would grow up in a safe and nurturing home. See more of Norland and Jayden’s story in the video below:
One of my main priorities with Jayden is for him to know that I’m there for him. Sometimes I’ll put him to bed, and I walk out and I remember ‘Oh, I didn’t give him a hug, I should probably go give him a hug.’ That’s a really big difference from the way I was raised. When I was growing up, a lot of it was me trying to protect myself from my parents. For Jayden, he knows that I’m his protector.
